  • Why is a Hemlock shed better than a pine or plywood shed? (They look very similar)
Hemlock is a much harder and stronger wood than pine or plywood. Due to its strength, walls and floors are stronger when framed with Hemlock. Additionally, insects and animals are less likely to bore into it so there are rarely issues with carpenter bees or carpenter ants. There are a number of builders who sell similar looking buildings but they rarely use Hemlock lumber. Why not buy the best?
  • Where is your price list?
Since the nature of our business is providing a customized shed for you, it is difficult to publish a static price list. Our prices fluctuate based on the type, size, customizations, delivery challenges and distance. We promise that we will work with you to arrive at a price that will match or beat local competitors who are selling sheds of lesser quality. Please fill out a Contact Form stating the roof style and the dimensions of the building you are looking for. When comparing us to other companies, we encourage you to consider the materials that they are using and the longevity of the building. Your building is an investment in your property.
  • Do you have a sales lot with inventory for immediate delivery?
Yes, we try to keep a number of buildings on display on our sales lot in Ancaster, Ontario so that you can have the opportunity to view these beautiful buildings in person. We do offer these for sale but occasionally need to hang onto them for a short period until we can get a replacement made. It is always best to call us to see what is available and to schedule a time to meet with us at the lot as we do not always have a sales person on site. Our new display models usually arrive sometime in April as the weather permits. If you are planning a backyard facelift, it is good to give us a call well in advance so that we can get you scheduled in for construction and delivery.
  • How long does it take to make and deliver my building?
We strive to have your building delivered within 3 weeks of ordering. Delivery times depend on the volume of orders, and are often dependent on decent weather conditions so that we can access your property when it is relatively dry. It is best to get your order in early in the season before we get busy. We are happy to store your building until conditions are best for delivery.
  • How do you get the building into my yard?
We prefer to deliver fully-assembled buildings so that you get the benefit of true Amish construction. This means that you require an unobstructed entrance to your yard that is at least 12" wider than the width of the shed that you order. For example, if you order a shed that is 10' wide then we need at least 11' of clearance in a straight path so that our forklift machine can maneuver the building into place. You should also note any issues that ight be encountered with roof overhangs, low tree branches, ditches, gas meters, fences, etc. Remember that our buildings are typically 10 feet to 11 feet tall (unless you order a shorter one) and they are elevated an additional 12" on wheels as we roll them into place.
  • I don't have a wide enough entrance, can you build the shed on site?
Yes, we do work with a few contractors who are familiar with Amish building techniques who will assemble the sheds on site. The Amish carpenters request that they remain on their farm so they are not available to construct the buildings on site. The Amish carpenters will pre-cut and prepare all of the building materials and will bundle them for the contractor. The materials will be delivered to the site and carried into the yard for assembly. We only require a standard gate entrance in order to get materials into place. Sometimes, the availability of our contractors means that we have to be more flexible with the installation time and there is an added cost of approximately 10% of the total price of the building in order to pay the contractors. You should also note that not all building sizes and designs are available using the contractor method. We do have an option to have buildings constructed in two halves and then assembled on site as an alternative. If you are looking for a shed that is 12' wide or more, it can come in two halves that are each 6' wide. This would require a 7' wide opening in order to deliver it. Feel free to call us to discuss options, sizes and timelines.
  • Do I need a building permit?
The Ontario Building Code changed effective April 29, 2022 and now allows for accessory buildings to be up to 15 square metres or 161 square feet. This means that buildings that are up to 10'x16' (or 11.5' x 14') no longer require a permit. Not all municipalities are up to date with this information (and some are not happy with the the rule change) so we recommend that you contact your local building department. Please feel free to call us and we can help you navigate any issues.
  • Can I change the location of the doors and windows so that I get a design that works best with my yard configuration?
YES! This is our specialty. We can plan the layout of your doors and windows along with the size of each opening. Just let us know what you need and we will prepare a floor plan for your approval before taking your order.
  • What is needed for a base under my building?
One of the great features of our Amish buildings is that they are built on top of two heavy duty Hemlock beams (4"x6") that run parallel below the building. The base of the building is constructed of full-sized 2"x 6" Hemlock floor joists on top of these beams. This means that the buildings can sit directly on the ground without any water seepage into the building. Even though this is true, we recommend a level, gravel base as an ideal base so that water can easily drain away from the building. If the ground is not level, we use a combination of patio stones and shims in the corners to ensure that the building is level before we leave. Some customers prefer to have a concrete base but this is not required. We do not currently offer the installation of the gravel or concrete bases, but most landscaping companies can offer this service. Customers who have a concrete base sometimes request that the two heavy duty beams or runners that sit below the building be removed, and this can easily be arranged. It is also possible to have your building constructed without the subfloor so that the concrete pad becomes the floor of the building once it is completed. Note that this does not provide much of a cost savings as the building requires quite a bit of bracing in order to safely load, transport and unload it. Please call us with any questions or ideas you may have.
  • Do you offer kits that I can assemble myself?
The short answer is "Yes". We do offer some kits in some basic designs so that you assemble the building yourself. Our Amish carpenter will cut and organize most of the materials for you and we can provide you with written instructions along with pictures. There are a few things to think about when ordering a kit: - Hemlock lumber and the steel roof are very heavy so there is a lot of leg work involved in moving the materials from the roadside to the location of your building. You will need a team of people to help you. - You should have a basic understanding of common building principles including framing, making sure floors and walls are square and plumb, plus proper tools for measuring, cutting and securing the materials. - You will need to be comfortable to climb ladders and climb on the roof to secure the steel panels as the final stage of your project. - The amount of time to complete a shed obviously depends on the size of the building and your level of building experience. As an example, we have found that 2 or 3 people with some building experience can assemble a small building (8'x10') in two or three full days. We will be happy to work with you to help you decide if a kit is right for you and to support you if you decide to go this route. Note that there is only about a 10% cost savings by building it yourself and you lose the benefit of the Amish expertise but you will gain the satisfaction of knowing that you built it yourself.
